Hosting means to place web sites on a server of an Internet service provider, briefly just called provider or even web host. The range of providers usually includes the provision of e-mail addresses, web space, databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle, and other products. Providers´ services include web hosting as well as email hosting. Web pages uploaded by customers by use of SFTP or FTP, are usually filed on the provider´s web server. A provider is also responsible for the registration of domains and, where appropriate, for their advertisement by DNS.

The web space which is made available by a provider is generally used by customers in order to publish their own web sites. These can either be private, business or commercial ones but also complex programs or applications that are created by use of the various scripting and programming languages such as PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, Perl, Python, C, Ruby or Java.

In addition to those customers making use of web hosting, there is also a large number of users that only utilize the e-mail hosting services.
